Dili, 20 July 2020: World Health Organization (WHO) Timor-Leste working closely with its headquarters in Geneva has developed a new course in the Tetum language — “Prevensaun no Kontrole Infesaun (PKI) ba Vírus COVID-19” Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) for COVID-19”.
This is the fourth of 11 courses on COVID-19 to be made available in Tetum. These courses are available on WHO’s online learning platform, www.openwho.org. “Timor-Leste, so far, has managed to prevent community transmission. But COVID-19 is far from over. As cases continue to rise globally, Timor-Leste remains at risk. IPC is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of COVID-19. The OpenWHO course on IPC in Tetum is designed to equip health workers with the most current evidence-based practice in IPC implementation,” said Dr Rajesh Pandav, WHO Representative to Timor-Leste.
This course, like all other COVID-19, has been designed by IPC experts from around the world working in both high and low-income settings.
Stopping transmission of COVID-19 requires good infection prevention and control (IPC) practice. IPC interventions such as hand washing, physical distancing and respiratory hygiene, for example, greatly reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
“OpenWHO.org course on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) for COVID 19 is designed to practically educate health workers to be prepared and ready to respond to COVID-19; learn about the infection prevention control interventions that limit human to human transmission; and teach how to identify, isolate and report suspect and confirmed cases,” said Dr Roderico Ofrin, Regional Emergency Director. “Understanding and practicing the basic IPC principles will not only reduce transmission of COVID-19 but save lives,” added Dr Ofrin.
OpenWHO courses are offered for free to anyone who registers with their email address. What is more, OpenWHO courses are self-paced, meaning one can take as much time as needed to complete a course.
